Return of the Modbook

Back in 2007, a company called Axiotron unveiled the Modbook, a repackaging of a MacBook as a tablet. Axiotron collapsed the following year, but was subsequently reborn as Modbook Inc and now offers the Modbook Pro.

A Modbook Pro starts life as a MacBook Pro that the company purchases from Apple on its customer's behalf. The guts are transplanted into a tablet style case, with the addition of a ForceGlass screen and a Wacom pen digitiser. Yes, it does use a pressure-sensitive stylus rather than a finger, but whether that's good or bad is a subjective matter.

Naturally, the rebuild voids the Apple warranty, but Modbook offers a "One-year warranty-equivalent service plan on MacBook Pro base system" as well as a one-year limited warranty on its own components.

Modbook has been ready to ship to Australia since mid-January, but at $US3499 excluding shipping and non-US mains plugs, the Modbook Pro ain't cheap, especially as the closest MacBook Pro configuration is $US1499 ($A1709 inc GST). And its 2.45kg weight approaches that of four - count them, four! - iPads.

But you are getting a whole bunch of stuff for your money, and if you want an OS X based tablet - or should that be slate? - you'll struggle to find an alternative.
