iPad app brings Grand Rapids Art Museum to the wider world

Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo's print "The Holy Family onthe Bank of a River" is
one of a set of 24 prints recently acquired by theGrand Rapids
Art Museum by the 18th century Italian artist.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – The Grand Rapids Art Museum brings the world’s art to West Michigan, and the museum is giving it back with an iPad app.

The museum’s “The Jansma Print Collection” iPad app gives users a look at works on paper by artists such as Rembrandt van Rijn, Albrecht Dürer and Édouard Manet in the art museum’s collection.

Launched 10 days ago, the app was downloaded in 20 countries its first week including by users in China, Mexico, France, United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands, Russia, Spain, and Saudi Arabia.

“We're so excited to find that by expanding our digital media program, GRAM is growing a truly global audience,” said Grand Rapids Art Museum director and CEO Dana Friis-Hansen.

Designed by Conduit Studio, the app was created in connection with the opening of the exhibition “The Jansma Print Collection at the Grand Rapids Art Museum: Five Centuries of Masterpieces.”

The exhibition of printmaking includes work by 18th century printmaker Giovanni Domenico and 20th century artist Max Pechstein, focusing on Christian and Biblical themes, spanning the 16th through the 20th centuries.

“GRAM is fortunate to have these unique old master prints in our collection, but because of their delicate nature, we must limit the time they are on view,” said museum president and CEO Dana Friis-Hansen.

“Working with Conduit Studio to create an iPad app and special website, we’ve made our collection and our scholarship accessible for independent learning at any time and in any place,” Friis-Hansen said.

The app offers an interactive opportunity for users to dive deeper into the collection and explore the exhibition with this user-friendly resource.

A dedicated website is being developed to mirror the iPad app. It's still in development, but you can preview The Jansma Collection at the Grand Rapids Art Museum online.

Conduit Studio is a Grand Rapids-based design firm led by Creative Director John O’Neill. Its clientele also includes Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts as well as Steelcase, Haworth and Wolverine Worldwide.

The Jansma Print Collection since 2005 has acquired 57 works on paper held at the Grand Rapids Art Museum.

The current exhibition, including the recently acquired “The Flight into Egypt” series of Tiepolo, is on view until Sept. 1.

The Jansma Print Collection, since 2005, has acquired 57 works on paper held at the Grand Rapids Art Museum.

"The passion the Jansma family shares for art, history, and spirituality is contagious," Friis-Hansen said. "Their gifts to the museum have resonating effects for those who have been able to see these prints first-hand."
