All of our iDevices are great, with the touch screen and all, right? With the iPad, you no longer need to have a notebook with actual sheets of paper — you can just get everything down on your tablet! Of course, the iPad (and iPhone and all other touch screen Apple products) are meant to be used with your fingers, but we all know that it can result in some … sloppy results.


While Steve Jobs did say “If you see a stylus, they blew it,” I don’t think he meant that for specific tasks, like drawing and handwriting notes on your iPhone and iPad. The truth is that a stylus has its time and place, and when it comes to using handwritten notes or professional drawing applications, a stylus really shines. It’s also pretty handy to have when it’s too cold to have your hands out, though you could use some touch screen capacitive glovesfor that too. With the Jot Pro, it’s like holding a mechanical pencil or a fine ballpoint pen, so it feels completely natural.

Hey, Nice Pen!

The Jot Pro resembles a fine, weighted ballpoint pen with the aluminum finish on the stylus. There is also a nicely textured rubber grip area above the tip, making it even more comfortable to hold in your hand.

The bottom of the stylus has a twist-off protective cap, which can be placed on to the top so you don’t lose it. The tip of the Jot Pro is extremely precise, and you will instantly think of something like those fine point .05 mm mechanical pencils or pens.

There is also a plastic precision disc on the bottom of the tip that allows users to see exactly where their marks are made on the screen, and it also dampens the sound, so it’s great for quieter environments.

While this particular model does not have a clip (the Jot Flip and Jot Minido), it has another feature that is equally as cool: magnets. Yep, that’s right — Jot Pro has magnets built in to it that make it easily attach to your iPad (iPad 2 and newer only) for instant transport with your tablet. This also makes it harder to lose, in case you’re forgetful.

The build quality is also pretty great. You can throw this into your daily bag or purse and it won’t get phased, thanks to the metal finish. It’s solid, weighty, and will last if you give it some care (don’t abuse it). It’s built like a finely crafted pen.

What’s Hot

I personally think this is one of the better stylus options out there, and it’s becoming one of my favorites. I love the feel of it — I always used mechanical pencils and fine point pens while in school, so the Jot Pro gives me a natural grip when using it.

The rubber makes it even easier to hold, just as pen grips do. It’s also very sleek looking, with the metal tip, brushed aluminum finish, and rubber — some may mistake you using a real pen on your iPad! And to top it off, the Jot Pro comes in four chic, metallic colors: Gun Metal, Red, Silver, and Turquoise.

During my use, I found the Jot Pro stylus to be incredibly accurate. This is in part due to the tip, and the precision disc. Since the tip is so fine, it really replicates the precision of a pen, unlike the Cosmonaut that I reviewed last year. The disc also protects your screen from scratches, but allows you to see just where you’re making your mark. When you use the Jot Pro, expect pinpoint accuracy. Oh, and quieter scribbling while in meetings and whatnot? How could you not like that?

It’s also incredibly convenient to have magnetic cling on the Jot Pro, because you can just throw it on top of your iPad and it’s good-to-go! No more looking for a place to stash it away while moving, which is always a plus.

During my use, I did not experience any uncomfortableness during prolonged use with the Jot Pro. Of course, I never really had trouble holding a pen or pencil for a while, so this may vary depending on person. I found it very comfortable and natural to hold while scribbling away at my iPad.

What’s Not

This is a bit expensive for a stylus, coming in at $29.99. The Jot Classic andJot Mini are very similar to the Pro, and come in at $15.99 and $21.99 respectively, minus a few features (sound dampening, magnetic cling, and rubberized grip). However, this does indeed feel like a premium product, and I find that it’s worth paying a few extra dollars for the Pro.

How Does It Stack Up?

The thing that separates the Jot Pro (and the entire Jot line, really), is the fact that it works like a real pen. Most other styluses have rubberized capacitive tips, like the Arctic Emote and Architect One. Others, like theCosmonaut, are purposely chunky to make it feel like a dry erase marker, which has its own time and place. But if you want precision and comfort, the Jot Pro stands out among the sea of iPad and iPhone styluses.
